Rough Search of Vague Knowledge

2017

This chapter presents the theoretical basis of the vague knowledge search algorithmization of a rough method. It introduces some data granulation method which aggregates this data as rough sets of data or ways to search this data in the semantic networks. As a result of this method is the possibility of the rough sets description, analogically to sets in the classical theory of sets. We try to answer the question how the agent searching some knowledge can conceive the search of vague knowledge in the semantic networks: (1) if it can, accordingly to the semantic and the conceiving rules, describe the relationships between nodes in this semantic network which are identified as ways of searchi…

The relationship between knowledge search strategies and absorptive capacity: A deeper look

2016

Abstract The present study analyzes how the breadth and depth of search strategies affect the dimensions of a firm's absorptive capacity: exploration, transformation and exploitation. Results of an analysis of a sample of 467 Spanish manufacturing firms reveal that openness of external knowledge search contributes to firms' exploratory, transformative and exploitative learning processes in different ways. In particular, a strong curvilinear effect of external knowledge search breadth on exploratory and exploitative learning was found. It is also important to establish deep relationships with external agents to achieve transformative and exploitative learning up to a certain point after whic…

Depth and breadth of external knowledge search and performance: The mediating role of absorptive capacity

2015

Nowadays it is commonly accepted that exploiting external knowledge sources is important for firms' innovation and performance. However, it is still not clear how this effect takes place and what internal capabilities are involved in the process. We propose to open the black box between external knowledge search strategies, and innovation and performance by proposing absorptive capacity (AC) as the mediating variable. A sample of 102 biotechnology firms from Spain is used to test the proposed theoretical model through structural equation modeling taking the partial least squares approach. Results suggest that AC acts as a full mediator in the relationship between the depth of external knowl…

Shaping the firm's external search strategy

2014

This paper explores the determinants of external knowledge search strategies, specifically, exploitative and exploratory search. The literature emphasizes environmental context and technological resources, especially R&D, as important determinants of the search strategy. In this paper we focus on two types of the firm's formal structure: formalized and decentralized structures. The study uses survey data from the ceramic tile industry in Spain. The results show that a competitive environment and a decentralized organizational structure play a role in shaping the firm's external search strategy, but that R&D has no effect. We find that competition inhibits exploratory search, while a decentr…
